Zamzam water containers in the Grand Mosque

The Story of the Well of Zamzam: A Source of Generosity and Blessing at the House of Allah

The Well of Zamzam, located in the heart of the Mataf area east of the Noble Ka’bah, is a testament to Allah’s mercy and kindness to His servants. Its history dates back to the time of Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him), when Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) left his wife Hajar and their son in a barren valley without vegetation or water. When Hajar asked Ibrahim, “Did Allah command you to do this?” he replied, “Yes,” and she responded with firm faith, “Then He will not abandon us.”

As Hajar frantically searched for water for her infant, running between Safa and Marwah, the angel Jibril (peace be upon him) struck the ground with his heel, causing the blessed waters of Zamzam to gush forth. Hajar began to contain the water and fill her vessel. Since then, this well has become a symbol of divine mercy and a refuge for pilgrims and visitors.

Names and Spiritual Significance of Zamzam

Zamzam carries many names that reflect its greatness, including “The Thrust of Jibril,” “Healing of Illness,” and “Food for the Hungry,” underscoring its status as the best water on earth. The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) described it as blessed, saying: “The best water on the face of the earth is Zamzam water; it is food that satisfies and a cure for sickness.”

Continued Care for Zamzam Water

Over the centuries, the Well of Zamzam has seen continuous care. In 1373 AH, King Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, modernized it by installing modern pumps and connecting twelve water outlets around the well, facilitating water extraction. In 1382 AH, during the reign of King Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, the surrounding buildings were removed to expand the Mataf, and the well was placed in a basement below, marking the end of bucket use, replaced by outlets. In 1399 AH, King Khalid, may Allah have mercy on him, ordered the cleaning of the well using advanced methods by experienced divers, resulting in an abundant flow of water. In 1424 AH, during King Fahd’s reign, may Allah have mercy on him, studies necessitated covering the well’s entrances to provide more space for Tawaf and prayer.

Unique Properties and Superior Purification

Zamzam water is sourced from three rock fractures beneath the Noble Ka’bah, flowing through ancient rocks from time immemorial. To ensure its quality, the water is purified using ultraviolet rays without chemicals, achieving a 99.77% disinfection rate from bacteria and viruses, ensuring its complete purity and unique taste.

A Symbol of Mercy and Generosity

Zamzam is more than a well; it embodies Allah’s mercy and symbolizes continuous generosity. It is a heavenly gift that quenches the spirits of believers and fills their hearts with faith. Through ongoing care, Zamzam remains available to refresh pilgrims to the House of Allah with pure water, just as it has for thousands of years.
